Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus

The President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, had a meeting on Wednesday, 28 February 2024, with King Willem-Alexander at the Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague.

President Christodoulides had a meeting with the King in the afternoon, within the framework of his one-day working visit to the Netherlands.

Upon his arrival at the Palace, a procession paid homage, and he was then received by King Willem-Alexander, with whom he had a meeting.

The meeting was focused on, inter alia, the developments with regard to the Cyprus problem, the situation in the Middle East and Ukraine, matters related to the exchange of experiences between Cyprus and the Netherlands on water management topics – a matter of particular interest to the King of the Netherlands – as well as topics related to the European agenda, such as the Future of Europe.

Afterwards, the President of the Republic signed the Visitors' Book of the Palace, in which he wrote the following:

"It is with genuine pleasure that I visit the Kingdom of the Netherlands for the first time in my capacity as President of the Republic of Cyprus, almost a year after my election. It is also a great honour to meet H.M. King Willem-Alexander, here, at the Huis ten Bosch Palace.

This visit reaffirms that our countries enjoy special, cordial and friendly relations, both bilaterally and at the European and multilateral level.

Personally, I am proud that our countries, member states of our common European family, are committed to upholding common universal and irreplaceable principles and values, a fact that is particularly important in these turbulent times.

I am also delighted that my visit, today, in The Hague and my meeting with His Majesty gave us the opportunity to discuss how we can give more impetus to the relations between our countries to further enhance them for the benefit of our people."
