Written statement by the Government Spokesman, Mr Konstantinos Letymbiotis
The President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, visited Cairo, Egypt, on Tuesday, 5 December 2023, where he held a meeting with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. During the meeting of the two leaders, discussions centred around the situation in the region, the shared will and vision for de-escalation of the crisis, as well as the commitment to seeking a political solution based on the Resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.
President Christodoulides referred to the timeless, crucial role that Egypt plays in this direction, both with regard to the political dimension of the Middle East conflict and in the context of providing humanitarian aid to civilians in the Gaza Strip.
President Christodoulides discussed with President El-Sisi ways to increase the volume of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Srip to address the humanitarian crisis. As part of a broader coordination for providing additional humanitarian aid, the President referred to specific aspects of the Republic of Cyprus’ initiative to create a maritime corridor for the uninterrupted provision of humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Gaza. The President of the Republic also informed President El-Sisi about the intention of several countries to contribute to the implementation of the maritime corridor and for the dispatch of humanitarian aid to Cyprus as part of the first pilot phase of the inititative.
Moreover, President Christodoulides also discussed with his Egyptian counterpart the energy plans of the two countries for exploiting natural gas reserves in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone, renewable energy sources, and electrical interconnection. The President assured his counterpart of Cyprus' steadfast support in strengthening the relations between the European Union and Egypt.
The two leaders reaffirmed the exceptional bilateral relations between the two countries, the intention to convene a trilateral Summit between Cyprus-Egypt-Greece, and the organisation of the next Cyprus-Egypt Intergovernmental Summit within 2024 to achieve the common goals set.
Following the visit to Cairo, the President of the Republic travelled to Amman, Jordan, where he met with King Abdullah II, in the presence of the Crown Prince, and then attended a working lunch hosted by the King.
The two leaders extensively discussed developments in our region and exchanged views on international efforts to revive the Middle East peace process. President Christodoulides discussed with King Abdullah the Cyprus initiative for a maritime corridor of humanitarian assistance, publicly supported by the King of Jordan. The President of the Republic and King Abdullah II agreed to remain on ongoing contact to promote the implementation of the initiative, as well as for their efforts to de-escalate and encourage the creation of a political horizon on the basis of a two-state solution. They also jointly reiterated the importance of respecting the status of holy sites in Jerusalem under the custodianship of Jordan.
