Addresses / Speeches
Fellow compatriots,
Dear friends,
This evening, on the most glorious of Christian celebrations, we shall partake in the profound mystery of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ – the culmination of a course marked by betrayal and denial, suffering, crucifixion, and burial.
I address you all with heartfelt joy and appreciation, so that we may exchange greetings and celebrate together the Resurrection of the Lord. May this joyous event instil us with messages of faith, perseverance, devotion, selfless service, love, and hope. May we carry home the blessings of this joyous event.
The symbolism of this day, celebrated throughout Cyprus – and, thankfully, also in occupied Karpasia and Kormakitis – is an inexhaustible source of empathy, love, and hope. It strengthens us, as does the unwaning light we share this evening, all Christians in every corner of the world.
It is this very light that I wholeheartedly wish to fill our homes and our hearts, so that each of us may become a beacon of compassion and solidarity towards our fellow human beings. Let us stand by and support the most vulnerable ‒ just as the State itself must strive to do each and every day – our children, our elderly, and people with disabilities.
Dear friends,
For yet another year, the bells of the Resurrection will not ring in all our churches across our occupied villages and towns. Refugees will not exchange Easter greetings in their own homes, and those who have suffered – and continue to endure the tragic consequences of the Turkish invasion and occupation – will once again be deprived of the celebration they rightfully deserve.
However, we press forward with perseverance and determination. Despite the obstacles and challenges, we remain steadfast in our efforts to create the conditions for the resumption of negotiations aimed at achieving a solution to the Cyprus problem, on the basis of the agreed framework and the negotiations’ acquis, with full respect for the principles and values of the European Union. Our aim is to reunite Cyprus, to liberate it, and to live together in peace and security.
The difficulties and challenges are well known. However, we have both the will and the strategy, and I promise you that I will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the Cyprus problem not only re-enters a phase of negotiation but also moves decisively towards a definitive solution.
We draw strength from the determination of our people and their yearning for freedom and peace. In close cooperation with all political groups, and in a spirit of unity, we are moving forward with a strategy which is already bearing fruit, and which is aimed at breaking down the wall of occupation. Our aim is for the Republic of Cyprus to become a reunified and free state, in which all its citizens – Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins – may fully enjoy their human rights and fundamental freedoms throughout the entire territory, as is their rightful due as European Cypriot citizens.
I want you to know that we shall continue our struggle with unwavering determination. Because for us, there is only one choice: the solution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of our homeland. We will not compromise with the unacceptable status quo; we will not allow Cyprus to remain the last divided state within the European Union.
We are not alone in this endeavour. We have the steadfast support of Greece, of the institutions and leaders of the European Union, and, undoubtedly, the solidarity and backing of our strategic partners. Together, we are building a Cyprus which is stronger, more resolute, and one that stands with greater credibility and self-confidence.
Dear friends,
The evolving international landscape, marked by geopolitical and economic turbulence which we are all witnessing, calls for prudence, seriousness, and sustained efforts to enhance our State’s strengths. In this regard, our Government remains committed to a prudent fiscal policy, guided by social sensitivity, far from populist approaches and hollow promises.
These are indeed challenging and unpredictable times. Yet, our homeland has proven that our economy is not only resilient but also competitive. This robust economy, together with the international recognition for its resilience, enables us to continue to responsibly implement a people-centred governance programme, so that growth and prosperity are achieved through continuous consultation with society and taking into account the needs of all.
Without a strong economy with growth prospects, you cannot plan and maintain a welfare state and a social policy. From the outset, our Government has focused on building a solid economic foundation to consistently reinforce the welfare state, to support mothers, children, and families, to boost our security and defence, and to enhance all of our country’s strengths.
We are successfully addressing the migration issue, we are working hard and actively pursuing solutions in housing and energy, while investing in healthcare and education — all with the aim of securing the well-being of our children and of every citizen.
We are consistently undertaking initiatives, and through a dynamic foreign policy, we are enhancing our country’s stature internationally. At the same time, we are attracting high-quality investments to further strengthen the resilience and competitiveness of our economy, and to be able to implement further reforms for the future of our country through prudent and responsible management.
Through an ambitious strategic planning and continuous initiatives both inside and outside Cyprus, we have successfully restored our country’s reputation, highlighting its comparative advantages. For Cyprus, and all of you, all of us, deserve a brighter future, a country with happier citizens who can dream, create, and thrive.
I take great satisfaction and draw strength from the fact that, day by day, Cyprus’ reputation and credibility are steadily improving, and our country is increasingly being highlighted internationally for all the right reasons. Cyprus is changing, and this is not only a belief of ours – it is also acknowledged by foreigners, who are positioning our country on their investment maps, strengthening bilateral relations, and forging strategic partnerships. Today, Cyprus stands as a reliable partner, not only within the European Union but also in the broader Middle East region, with strong ties across the Atlantic. Cyprus’ voice and role are recognised and strategically leveraged for the benefit of our people.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
In a few hours, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ will signify the victory of light over darkness, the triumph of life over death – a miracle at a point where even the most faithful had lost all hope.
In a world full of challenges, it is our duty, my duty, to remain faithful, committed, serious, and optimistic. For Cyprus, its people, and our children deserve to experience, from one end of the island to the other – from Pafos to Apostolos Andreas, from Ammochostos to Keryneia – days of resurrection. No matter how difficult the path may be, we will walk it together, with unity and perseverance, so that the light of peace and prosperity may shine across our entire island.
Wishing you all a joyful Easter and many blessings.
