The President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, had a meeting on Monday, 12 December 2022, at the Presidential Palace, with the President of Slovakia, Ms Zuzana Čaputová.
The one-day visit of the Slovak President in Cyprus, who also serves as Chief of the Armed Forces of Slovakia, took place in order to visit the Slovak contingent of UNFICYP ahead of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
In the framework of her visit, the President of Slovakia also met with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus, Mr Colin Stewart.
During the meeting of the two Presidents, the bilateral relations between Cyprus and Slovakia were reviewed, while the President of the Republic thanked for the principled stance of Slovakia in the efforts for the resumption of the negotiations and for Slovakia’s solidarity within the EU, against the Turkish provocative actions against Cyprus.
He also briefed his counterpart on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and the ongoing Turkish illegal actions both on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, especially in the Famagusta region, and in its maritime zones, as well as on the problem that Cyprus is facing due to the instrumentalisation of immigration by Turkey.
Finally, the two Presidents discussed the developments and implications of the Russian invasion and the war in Ukraine.
Present at the meeting were also the Minister of Defence, Mr Charalambos Petrides, the Government Spokesman, Mr Marios Pelekanos, the Director of the Diplomatic Office of President, Mr Kyriakos Kouros, and government officials.
