Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus


Developments in the Cyprus problem, bilateral relations, international developments, as well as EU - China relations were among the issues discussed during a meeting of the President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, with the Vice President of the People’s Republic of China, Mr Han Zheng, in New York. During the meeting, issues relating to the bilateral relations of the two countries were also discussed, and the excellent level of these relations in recent years was reaffirmed.

Speaking through an interpreter, the Chinese Vice President said during the meeting that “it is important that our two countries work together to promote their traditional friendship and extend their cooperation and exchanges, as well as to achieve a higher level in their strategic relation.” He further reiterated his country’s long lasting support within the United Nations Security Council, for a just solution to the Cyprus problem in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions and based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

On his part, and on behalf of the Cyprus government, President Christodoulides thanked China for its firm stand on the Cyprus problem, based on principles, and for its unwavering support within the United Nations Security Council. The President reiterated the Republic of Cyprus’ steady adherence to the “One China” policy and expressed the will to further build on our bilateral cooperation in various fields, such as investments, trade and tourism. President Christodoulides further noted that he is looking forward to a future visit of his to China “to discuss bilateral relations in all fields with President Xi Jinping.”

Concluding the President of the Republic said, “we shall continue to play a constructive role in strengthening EU - China relations”.
